Want a great laptop but don't want to pay a lot? Apple computers are known for their longevity and durability, even after the point where PCs would be considered obsolete. That means that for the cost conscious, a used iBook could be a great choice. After all, there are plenty of Macs out there still going strong after three, five, seven, or even ten years!
Of course, an older computer should be chosen with some care. You'll want a used iBook that hasn't been carried around a lot, since vibrations and stress can be hard on even the best of computers. However, Macs that have been treated relatively gently will still operate well, even if a lot of hours have been logged on them. You'll also need to make sure that you know what you want out of your computer.
A used iBook is a great choice if you want a portable, durable computer for word processing, web browsing, email, and other relatively low intensity uses. An older machine won't be the best choice if you're looking for a desktop replacement or if you want to do much in the way of gaming, graphics processing, or programming. However, for most uses, you'll find that one of these older machines will work quite well. G4 and even G3 iBooks are an excellent choice for the casual user on the go.
Remember to find out if the software you want to use is compatible with older versions of the Mac OS if you're thinking about going this route, and if the machine you want to buy is capable of running newer OS versions if you don't have good software compatibility. After all, the hardware on some of these machines may feel underpowered if you're trying to run a high intensity application on Leopard.
Prices are highly variable, and will generally be higher than those on PCs from a similar era. However, there's a reason for it. While those PCs are really starting to develop "personality", many of the iBooks are still operating smoothly and have several more years in them. Just be sure you know all the possible faults in the model you're hoping to purchase, and learn as much as you can about the machine and seller before you buy. There are lots of great used iBooks out there, and very few duds, but it never hurts to be prepared, after all.
So, if you're in the market for a fun used laptop and don't want to pay too much, an older iBook might just be the thing. These sturdy, fun little computers may be on the older side, but they're still going strong. Check out our great selection of refurbished and used iBooks today.
